London Borough of Wandsworth: Food Waste Collections

Challenge

Wandsworth Council wanted to roll out a new food waste collection service for their residents – that’s X households in all. It was vital that this was carried out as smoothly as possible.

Solution

We held workshops and focus groups as well as carrying out a survey to baseline resident knowledge of food waste recycling and understand the likely barriers. We then worked with the Council’s communications team using the Com-B model to plan a targeted campaign. This included drafting letters, online advertising, creating videos and choosing ambassadors who would be influential with resident groups.

Impact

  • The introduction of food waste collections was a massive success
  • Wandsworth has already recycled 5,000 tonnes of additional recycling
  • The cost saving to the organisation is £1.2m which is being reinvested in cleaner streets.
