Public Health and NHS Workshop

This bespoke workshop helps public health, NHS and communications teams understand what really drives behaviour and how to apply behavioural science to design services, interventions and communications that are more likely to work.

Public Health & NHS workshop
Dominic Ridley-Moy delivers a workshop to the Richmond and Wandsworth Council public health teams

Whether you want to increase vaccination uptake, encourage people to stop smoking, reduce missed appointments or help people access the right NHS service, the starting point is the same:

What needs to change for people to actually do something differently?

Behaviour change that delivers measurable outcomes

Behavioural approaches can make a measurable difference to public health outcomes — while helping teams make better use of limited communications and campaign budgets.

Examples featured in the workshop include:

+20% vaccination uptake
Through simple interventions such as targeted text reminders.

50% quit rate at four weeks
Among people using local stop-smoking services.

32% → 46% hand hygiene compliance
Following a structured behaviour-change intervention.

£0.29 cost per click online
Compared with £82 through offline activity.

Why information isn’t enough

People rarely make decisions based on information alone.

Someone may know exactly what they are supposed to do but still face practical barriers, competing priorities, habits, social influences, fear, uncertainty or a lack of trust.

That is why simply giving people more information, or producing another communications campaign, isn’t always enough.

During the workshop, we explore questions such as:

  • Do people understand what they need to do?
  • Is the behaviour easy enough to carry out?
  • Do they have the opportunity and resources to do it?
  • What habits or competing behaviours get in the way?
  • Who do people trust?
  • What happens to decision-making when people are overwhelmed?
  • Are we asking communications to solve a problem that actually requires a service or system change?

Participants learn how to diagnose these barriers using COM-B: Capability, Opportunity and Motivation.

What you will learn

By the end of the workshop, your team will be able to:

  • Define the specific behaviour you want to change.
  • Set clear behavioural and outcome objectives.
  • Identify the barriers and drivers behind current behaviour.
  • Use behavioural frameworks including COM-B and EAST.
  • Develop interventions that tackle the real causes of behaviour.
  • Create messages that support behaviour change, not just awareness.
  • Choose effective and cost-efficient channels.
  • Join up communications, engagement, clinical and operational activity.
  • Evaluate your intervention and demonstrate its impact.

Practical, interactive and based on your challenges

This isn’t simply a presentation about behavioural science.

Participants work through real behaviours and live organisational challenges, using practical tools that they can apply to future campaigns and programmes.

The session combines:

  • Real-world public health and behaviour change examples
  • Practical behavioural science frameworks
  • Exercises based on your own challenges
  • Group problem-solving
  • Intervention and communications development
  • Practical ideas your team can take away and develop

The aim is to move from “we need people to do this” to a much clearer understanding of why they aren’t doing it now, and what could realistically change that.

Testamonials

“Dominic’s behaviour change training for our public health teams really helped us get to grips with behavioural science, while providing a useful refresher for colleagues already familiar with the principles. The session helped us think practically about how behavioural insights can be applied to the public health challenges we face and generated useful discussion across the team.”
